Hello there! I’m your locally owned self-storage facility, AAA Lakeside Storage, here to help you declutter, organize, and protect your belongings. But as much as we love keeping your treasures safe, not everything is suited for our units. Let’s talk about a few items you should avoid storing to keep things safe, secure, and worry-free—for both you and me!
1. Perishable Items
I get it—extra space in your home fridge is sometimes hard to come by. But storing food, produce, or anything that spoils in our units is a big no-no. Perishable items attract pests, cause unpleasant odors, and can lead to messes that no one wants to deal with. Trust me, you wouldn’t want your groceries sharing space with some unexpected critters!
What to do instead: Consider donating excess food to a local food pantry or storing non-perishable goods in proper kitchen storage.
2. Hazardous Materials
Our units are tough, but they’re not designed to handle flammable, explosive, or toxic substances. Things like gasoline, propane tanks, fireworks, and cleaning chemicals can be dangerous to store here. Not only do they pose safety risks, but storing them might also violate local regulations.
What to do instead: Safely dispose of hazardous materials at designated facilities in your area.
3. Living Beings (Yes, Really!)
We love to keep things safe and sound, but I draw the line at anything living. This means no pets, plants, or—you’d be surprised—humans trying to sneak in for a nap. Living beings need light, air, and care that we simply can’t provide.
What to do instead: For pets and plants, ensure they have proper care at home or with trusted sitters. And as for yourself, I recommend a cozy home or a hotel for a restful night!
4. Cash, Jewelry, or Irreplaceable Items
We pride ourselves on being secure, but let’s face it—priceless heirlooms and wads of cash are best kept in a safe deposit box or home safe. In the rare event of theft or disaster, losing irreplaceable items would be devastating.
What to do instead: Store valuable documents and treasures in fireproof safes or with financial institutions.
5. Weapons and Ammunition
While we support your right to protect your property, firearms, ammunition, and other weapons shouldn’t be stored here. These items come with specific storage requirements for safety and legal reasons.
What to do instead: Seek out a licensed firearms storage facility designed for secure, compliant storage.
6. Wet or Damp Items
Water and storage units don’t mix. Storing damp items like wet clothes, towels, or sporting gear can lead to mold, mildew, and musty odors that can affect other belongings nearby.
What to do instead: Dry items thoroughly before packing them up for storage.
7. Unregistered or Inoperable Vehicles
While we’re happy to house your cars, boats, or RVs, we have some ground rules. They must be registered, operable, and free from leaks. Abandoned or non-functioning vehicles are not only against our policy—they’re a headache to deal with!
What to do instead: Repair and register your vehicle before storage, or recycle it through a proper channel.
Why It Matters
By avoiding these items, you’re helping to maintain a clean, safe, and compliant environment for all our storage tenants. We’re here to give you peace of mind, but we need your cooperation to make that happen. Together, we can ensure your belongings (and everyone else’s) are safe and secure.
Got questions about what’s safe to store? Just ask! We’re always here to help. Our office is open Monday-Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Stop by or give us a call at 801-377-5900.
Warm regards,
AAA Lakeside Storage
